When you have a tree on your house at 2 AM

There are two things you need from a tree company in an emergency: someone who answers the phone, and someone who actually knows how to work safely on a damaged tree. Both are rarer than you'd think. After every big storm in Lapeer County, we get calls from people who've left voicemails at three other companies and waited on hold with national chains. We answer. A real person, day or night. And then we get moving.

Storm-damaged trees are not the same as standing trees. A tree that's pinned against your roof has stored energy in it — bent trunk, compressed branches, twisted root plate — and every cut releases that energy in a direction you have to predict before you make the cut. Get it wrong and the tree shifts, the load drops on the structure (or the worker), and a bad situation becomes a catastrophe. Hung trees (trees that fell into other trees and got caught) are even worse. They're the leading cause of fatal accidents in our trade. They have to be brought down with proper rigging and lift equipment by a licensed and insured crew, never by a homeowner with a chainsaw. Please don't try. And before you let any tree company on your property in an emergency, ask for proof of insurance — if an uninsured worker gets hurt on your land, that liability can land on your homeowner's policy.

What you should do, right now, if you have a tree emergency: get everyone out of the affected part of the structure. Stay away from the tree. If power lines are involved, treat them as live and call 911 plus the utility. Then call us at (810) 614-3147. We'll triage your situation on the phone — sometimes we can talk you through what to do until we arrive, sometimes we just need you to stay clear and wait — and then we'll get a crew rolling.

Storms, power lines, insurance, and what happens next

Most of our emergency calls come from a few common scenarios. Summer thunderstorms with straight-line winds drop large limbs and snap off softwood tops — easy to clean up, but the damage is often spread across multiple trees on a property. Ice storms in winter coat everything in a quarter-inch of weight that even healthy hardwoods can't carry, and we lose whole trees and big branches across the region. Saturated-ground tip-overs happen in spring when wet soil can't hold the root plate of a tall tree against even moderate wind. And the occasional summer microburst takes out everything in its path. We've worked them all.

If a tree is on a power line — or a downed line is anywhere near a tree — that's a job for the utility first, then us. Never go near a downed line. We coordinate directly with DTE and Consumers Energy on jobs where we have to wait for de-energization before we can work safely. It adds time, but it's the only way to do it.

Insurance documentation is included in every emergency job. We take photos of the tree, the damage, the work area, and the cleanup. We write up notes on cause, scope, and what was done. Most homeowners' policies cover tree-on-structure damage, and a clean documentation package from us is exactly what your adjuster needs to process the claim quickly. We've worked with most of the major carriers in Michigan and we know what they want to see.

Warning Signs

When to call us right away.

An emergency tree call isn't always a tree on a house. Any of these situations qualify and should be addressed the same day, not next week.

  • Tree on a house, garage, shed, vehicle, or fence — even if no one's hurt.
  • Tree blocking a driveway, road, or only path of access in or out.
  • Hung tree caught in another tree after a storm — extremely dangerous, do not approach.
  • Large hanging branch ("hanger") in the canopy after a storm — could fall any time.
  • Visible new lean in a tree after a storm or after the ground was saturated.
  • Tree split at the trunk or with a major scaffold limb torn off, especially near structures.
  • Any situation involving a tree and a power line — call the utility AND us.

Pricing

What affects the price.

Emergency work costs more than scheduled work — that's true everywhere — but we keep our pricing fair and we tell you up front. Here's what affects an emergency quote.

Time of call

Daytime emergency response costs less than overnight, weekend, or holiday calls. Same crew, but the after-hours premium is real.

Severity

A hanging branch we can rig down in an hour is a small bill. A tree through your roof requiring a lift and heavy rigging is a much bigger one.

Lift & rigging needs

Big or pinned trees often need a lift operator and full rigging setup. That gear and crew time adds to the bottom line, but it's the only safe way to do the work.

Power line involvement

Coordinating with the utility takes time and adds complexity to the work.

Cleanup scope

Make-it-safe-and-leave costs less than full removal and cleanup. Most insurance jobs include the full cleanup.

Insurance vs. out-of-pocket

If insurance is paying, we work to your adjuster's scope. If you're paying directly, we'll size the job to your priorities.

FAQs

Questions we hear a lot.

How fast can you get here?
+
For active emergencies in our core service area (Lapeer, Imlay City, Metamora, Grand Blanc, Shelby Township, Romeo and surrounding towns across Lapeer, Genesee, St. Clair, Oakland and Macomb Counties), we typically arrive within 1–3 hours, day or night. After major storms, response times can stretch — call as early as you can.
Do you charge to come out for an emergency estimate?
+
On true emergencies (active hazards), we typically waive the trip charge and roll straight into the work. For damage assessment without immediate work, we'll give you a quote on site.
Will my insurance cover this?
+
Most homeowners' policies cover tree-on-structure damage. Trees down in your yard (without hitting anything) are usually not covered. We provide the photos and documentation your adjuster needs either way.
What if I have a tree on a power line?
+
Stay away. Call 911 if there's any fire risk, then call the utility (DTE or Consumers Energy) to de-energize the line. Then call us. We don't work on energized lines — that's the utility's job — but we handle everything once the line is safe.
Can you tarp my roof until repairs are made?
+
Yes. Once the tree is off, we can install temporary tarp protection over damaged roof sections to keep weather out until your roofer can do permanent repairs.
Is the tree in my neighbor's yard but on my house — who's responsible?
+
In Michigan, generally the property owner where the damage occurred files the claim, regardless of where the tree was rooted. Document everything with photos before any work, and we'll help with the rest.
